The Burton & District Branch of the Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry was founded in 1985. It is one of the nine branches of the BMSGH, which also includes a Heraldry Group.
The Branch originated from a short course on "How to trace your Family History" at Burton Technical College which started in September 1984. The lecturer was Tony Fenwick and the class was quite full. By the time it had run its course, without losing many members, Tony asked whether anyone would be interested in forming a branch of the BMSGH in Burton.
Quite a lot of positive interest was shown, and a large number of the "class" came along to the first session which was held in the lecture theatre at the College. Approximately 50 people attended and it was decided to go ahead with the Burton Branch which began meeting monthly in an upstairs room at Burton Library.
At the first meeting a committee was organised and the decision was also made to have a bookstall - which continued until quite recently selling books and magazines on all aspects of Family History in order to help members with their research at home. This was well before the advent of the internet which is now a very useful 'tool' to research Family History.
Over the past 26 years we have had speakers on all sorts of topics of interest to Family Historians. To celebrate the first 20 years of the Society we had a special meeting and a special speaker to mark the occasion. There was an anniversary cake and a buffet for all who attended and a photgraph was taken of all the founder members who could attend (shown below).
In 2010 there was another excuse for a celebration, 25 years this time,
with a cake, buffet and party (picture shown below).
